Let’s go make a picture: Hazel’s bedroom from the ground up.

January 19th, 2009

The fam & I are currently sharing a tiny one-bedroom apartment – crafter-mom, musician-and-academic-dad, baby, dog – one bedroom. We have a lot of stuff, but decided not to trade up when we got pregnant because we are counting on leaving sometime within Hazel’s first year of life. Tiny babies don’t need much room – a little crib, a rocking chair, floor space for playing. So when we DO move home, we get to make a room all at once. I’ve never done this before, and I’m quite into it even though we aren’t sure when we’ll be relocating, and we’re not even 100% certain that it will be this year. I can’t help myself – aside from making our whole wedding, it’s my biggest project ever. I think a particular quilt will be my palette, with an overall nature / bird / plantlife theme. Aside from this particular quilt, I hope that everything for her room will be scoured from clearance bins, yardsales, and will be handmade. In that perspective I don’t feel so over-eager about starting in January :)

Because we are in a hobbit-sized space, all of our books are together, her toys are stored by daddy’s banjo, we all share one closet (I’m a master organizer), but she does have a bit of wall space that is her own and her own dresser (to fill the top of with Hazel Things). So even though I made this for her future-bedroom this morning, I promptly hung it up and put it to use… and took a rather gloomy-looking photo of it, but you get the picture (har har).

Charley Harper alphabet flashcards: $4.00 on clearance table becuase the “B” has a chunk missing, so the floor puzzle made by the backs is incomplete. Other than the B, I hope to incorporate the rest of the alphabet, or at least the images, into fun things. Already have plans for “D is for Dog” :)

clippy photo frame: $6.00 at Ikea.

Not too bad – I’m still keeping an eye out for the perfect background (something colorful since most of the images are earth tones and the ladybugs kind of stick out like a sore thumb), but for now the white will do.

This entry inspired by my friend Erin – the queen of trash picking, clearance bin finds, and revamping.

Working on: sorting photos to make prints; birthday cards
