Oh, Canada
August 2nd, 2006Just uploaded some new things to Etsy. Some wallets & earrings.

Before I did that, we went to Toronto.

Mikey’s new home.

and mine.

the view….

…from our balcony.

Our empty apartment (aside from some odds & ends that the former tenants have not moved out). Empty apartment photos tell you nothing. I’ll post a bunch of detailed ones when we have everything moved in & arranged. You will be dumbfounded by the sheer amount of books.

Ethiopian food one block from our haus. So. Good.

Lake Ontario.

(Faded) rainbow signs in the gayborhood are one of my favorite things. seriously.

The CN tower.

I think the haze is the awful humidity clinging to my body. Gross.
Mikey & John nerd out in all kinds of ways:

Our currency exchange method: we buy John scotch at the border, John gives us Canadian cash dollars, we drink John’s scotch.
So we got our visas (they are pretty) – the woman at the immigration office gave me my work visa even though she wasn’t technically supposed to, so that saves me one trip to the human resources office in town. We saw our apartment (which is good), ate good food, drank beers with fellow american students who were very awesome. We watched Pulp Fiction for the first time in Mikey’s life, had a driving tour of a lot of the city via John’s Tour Service. I spotted about nine fabric and bead stores all in a row, but how to I compare a yard of fabric to a meter? I don’t know how to buy fabric, I don’t know how many LITRES of gas my car will hold, it takes me six minutes to convert C to F when I find out the temperature in the morning, I will never get used to pocket change being one and two dollar coins.
But I am excited. IF I wanted to (which I don’t), I could walk around the city topless. Men are allowed, so women are, too. I’m too modest, but just the idea is liberating.

I think the correct spelling, to Canadians, would be “gaybourhood.” :)

seriously, the cowboy wallet, almost as cool as my BMF wallet. almost.
oh yeah, yea! for canada!

is the wallet made from a pattern or did you just wing it?
August 2nd, 2006 at 3:48 pm
jenn, i wung it. HOWEVER, i got some plastic template sheets today so i can make them a bit quicker (i.e., cut out all the pieces for five wallets or whatever and then sew them all). so if you want dimensions for whatever patterns i devise, holla. i’m going to make a set pattern for one like that, and then a longer one that’ll have a snap on each corner (so bills lay flat, you know? with a row for cards on the other half)…… photos eventually. hopefully i can get a bunch done tonight.

warning about the dollar/two-dollar coins: they make you think that you’re not really spending much. whenever something is one or two pounds here, i think, “hey, that’s nothing, it’s just a coin or two,” but we americans have actually been brainwashed into associating coins with very small amounts of money. totally not true!
did you find the veggie-dog hotdog stands? lindsay and i came across a couple of ‘em there last year. i’ll get a list of good veggie restaurants from her.

jana, it seems like EVERY hot dog stand has veggie dogs!! i didn’t see a single one that did not. i’m going to need a second job to fund our desires to try every good restaurant (and sidewalk stand) in the city.

I love reading your blog… but it makes me sad. I know you guys will have fun in the “T Dot” (as those of us from Hickville used to call it). We may be going up to my best friend’s for New Years, so if we do……… MAYBE WE’LL SEE YOU! Man, I already miss you guys.. *sigh*
